Synopsis

Dr. Magnus Agustsson is the Icelandic-born son of the artist Agust Larusson, whose frescoes still adorn the Opera House, churches, and other buildings in Iceland. Magnus migrated to the U.S. in the late 1950s and became a prominent pediatric cardiologist and surgeon, but always maintained his love of art and the creative influence of his father. As a professor and doctor at Rockford Medical College, Magnus studied art for 7 years, fitting class audits into a schedule already busy with family, teaching, and life-saving surgeries. Following multiple professorships, contributing significantly to his field, and treating countless patients, Magnus retired from pediatric cardiology in 1989. While continuing to hold medical administrative roles and still practicing medicine part time well into his 80s, he turned to his lifelong passion: sculpture. Having completed hundreds of busts and figures, he has achieved some recognition but remains largely unknown. At 89, he continues to sculpt each morning in his small basement studio beneath his gallery in Kingston, NY. With ten grown children, an illustrious medical career, and more than 20 years of dedicated sculpting behind him, Dr. Agustsson reflects on his life with wonder, appreciation, and some regret.
